About the Show

Winner of the 1999 Tony Award® for Best Play, Side Man is a poignant memory play set in 1953 and traveling to 1985. It is the story of Gene Glimmer, a jazz trumpet player and his wife, Terry, as seen through the eyes of their son, Clifford. We see the jazz musicians from their heyday after the war through the decline of big bands and bop and the rise of rock-n-roll. A steady livelihood became a patchwork of club dates, one-night gigs and unemployment checks. We also learn about the sacrifices made by these men and their families to serve their passion for the music.
