Cookin’ at the Cookery: The Life and Times of Alberta Hunter

About the Show

Written and directed by Marion J. Caffey, this stirring, poignant, humorous biographical musical chronicles the life and art of incomparable jazz singer Alberta Hunter, a legendary figure who devoted decades to the music business, then left it all to work in anonymity as a scrub nurse for two decades – only to return to Chelsea’s famous Cookery nightclub (at age 82), where she staged one of the most astonishing comebacks in entertainment history. The show incorporates over twenty of Hunter’s signature tunes, including "Handy Man," "Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out," and "My Castle’s A-Rockin’." Cookin’ at the Cookery is presented in association with Queens Theatre in the Park.
