Inspired by Elvis Presley and his draft notice in 1957, the Tony Award winning Bye Bye Birdie centers on the effects of a popular rock-and-roll star leaving for the army. The suave superstar in question is hip-thrusting heartthrob Conrad Birdie. Before heading overseas, Conrad’s agent devises a publicity stunt to have him appear on The Ed Sullivan Show to sing a song and give One Last Kiss to a lucky girl from his fan club. When fifteen-year-old Kim MacAfee is chosen as that lucky girl, the teenage hysteria begins. Everyone in her small town is thrilled except her boyfriend Hugo and of course, her parents. As the show and impending kiss draw closer, tension and teenage romance play out against the backdrop of the emerging rock-and-roll culture in this popular musical comedy.
