New York City
A coronation is about to take place. Polly Peachum, daughter of Jeremiah Peachum (who controls the beggar’s turf in London), secretly marries Macheath, king pin of a gang of thieves. One betrayal follows another, as Macheath tries to elude both the police and his jealous new wife. In a hysterical finale — a brilliant sendup of operatic endings — the Queen’s pardon is delivered just as Macheath is about to be hanged. THE THREEPENNY OPERA was the first collaboration between playwright Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill.
