About This Show

The London Standard calls Simpatico “… poetry in theatre, shaping a new language out of broken words… a meditation on heartache.” Join Devanaughn Theatre Company for another stunning portrayal in its third ambitious season exploring language, memory, fidelity, and identity. Directed by distinguished Jeannie-Marie Brown, Sam Shepard’s 1995 masterpiece is a psychological thriller set in the world of professional horse racing.

Laced with blackmail, false identities, and les femmes fatales, Simpatico reveals the underbelly of a fragmented society. Grasping for ascendancy catapults Shepard’s characters into an emotional melee that constricts interpersonal relationships and distorts reality. Past actions and character fiber discolor inner perspective and unleash an idiosyncratic race for freedom. That race mirrors majestic thoroughbreds confined to an eternal racetrack yearning for pastoral freedom. Simpatico’s characters are multifaceted beings that are steeped in humor, tinged with tragedy, providing us with insight and endless entertainment.
