Near Cave City, Kentucky, in the winter of 1925, a local cave owner and operator, Floyd Collins, was attempting to discover a new cave which would prove his theory that many caves in the region were all part of one, giant underground system. Instead, he became trapped in Sand Cave, 150 feet underground. One of the few who finally managed to actually reach Collins was Skeets Miller, a cub reporter from the Louisville Courier-Journal. He conducted a series of interviews which were relayed to the national press, which went wild, printing numerous front page stories. Soon an estimated twenty-thousand onlookers arrived from all over America–to help, to get a glimpse of the now heroic Floyd, to exploit the crowd. As the carnival reached its height, Collins was all but forgotten. No one was able to rescue him, and he died trapped underground. Around him swirled the first great media circus of the modern era. Directed by Gregory Jacobs-Roseman. Produced by Ilana Becker.
