About This Show

Arthur Miller tackles one of humanity’s most compelling and troublesome stories in Creation of the World and Other Business. God has created the world. Oh, sure there was the fish with fur and a few other flubs, but basically things are going well. But then God creates human beings and all hell breaks loose!

Dividing his play into “three questions on the human dilemma,” Miller begins with a charming and gently humorous retelling of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. After their expulsion from paradise, Eve gives birth to her two sons under the manipulative eyes of God and Lucifer, whose struggles with each other and the meaning and purpose of God’s latest creation intensify. The situation climaxes in the concluding portion of the play as Cain kills his brother and is sent out to become a wanderer on the face of the earth. In re-interpreting this ancient story, Miller explores the age-old dilemma: “When every man wants justice, why does he go on creating injustice?” Throughout the action, which alternates scenes of sprightly humor with absorbing confrontations and highly complex relationships, the striking pertinence of the play becomes ever more clear. It is a parable for our time, and for all time, rich with philosophic insight and alive with vivid theatricality. Fred Robbins directs.
