About This Show

Boston Theatre Works presents Confessions of a Mormon Boy, the amazing story of a model Mormon’s struggle with excommunication, redemption, prostitution and drugs to rise to grace as an out and proud gay man. Stephen Fales’ award winning and critically acclaimed Off-Broadway hit is an autobiographical one-man show, directed by Tony Award-winner Jack Hofsiss (The Elephant Man, The Shadow Box).

Fales was the perfect Mormon boy: an Eagle Scout, international missionary, BYU graduate, married in the Salt Lake Temple, and father of a beautiful boy and girl. But what is to become of this model Mormon when his attempts to overcome “same-sex attraction” through “reparative therapy” don’t work? For Fales it was a heart-wrenching journey through divorce and excommunication from the church, which led him into the gay underworld of escorting and drugs in New York City. Confessions of a Mormon Boy is the saga of this Latter-day prodigal son as he struggles to reclaim himself, his children and his “Donny Osmond smile.”

A breakout hit during the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival — for which the play received a coveted Overall Excellence Award — Confessions of a Mormon Boy also received a New York Outer Critics Circle Award Nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance.
