About the Show

Ah, the empire. White men ran the world, wives were paragons of femininity, and every race knew its place – all in service of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. But in Cloud Nine, rules are made to be broken, and every preconception is turned topsy-turvy. With acrobatic wit and stunning alacrity, Caryl Churchill breaks down the barriers of time, gender roles and racial boundaries. Starting out in colonial Africa, then jumping to London in the swinging seventies, men play women, blacks play whites, and one of those kids is a real doll. This show is directed by Berkeley’s Artistic Director Tony Taccone.
