The story of Jason and Medea receives a postmodern treatment in an immensely intriguing production from Dood Paard, one of Amsterdam’s most acclaimed theater ensembles. The staging is deceptively simple: Against the backdrop of a starkly rendered landscape, three actors variously assume multiple roles, giving voice to the story’s main characters while also playing the part of the Greek chorus. The resulting narrative builds inexorably toward the climax, until Medea’s desperation becomes palpable, leading us to think anew about love and the many truths and lies that relate to it.
