New York City
Equal parts suspense thriller, magic act and zany cabaret, Major Bang, written by Kirk Lynn and directed by Paul Lazar, offers a darkly comic take on our new era of global (in)security. Inspired by a backpack left on the New York subway, the piece combines elements of Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove with the true story of David Hahn, a boy scout who built a nuclear reactor in his parents’ garage. Add in Hahn’s over-caffeinated father, a seductive food irradiation executive, a deranged scoutmaster – Major Bang himself – and a cameo appearance by Lenny Bruce, back from the dead to discuss the war on terror, and you have a drolly sardonic ride through 21st century concepts of fear – both real and manufactured.
