About the Show

Long before the racy antics of “real housewives” and the steamy editing of reality TV shows, Wycherley’s riotous play dealt with all manner of racy, comic and bawdy situations–in the terminology of the day, of “country matter.” The double entendre of the 1675 title was clear to its audience: productions of the play in 18th and 19th centuries were severely edited for content. This saucy satire takes no prisoners as it laughs at societal mores, scandals, sex and the manners of both women and men. Directed by Janice Pohl.
