Quita Mitos

Teatro Luna, Chicago’s acclaimed all-Latina theatre company, premieres Quita Mitos (“myth remover”), an intimate portrait of three very different women, each one culturally and geographically adrift in a cheap motel room. There’s a rich Mexican-born woman who hates peanut butter, jelly, and snow; a self-identified “pocha” (American/Mexican mix) fascinated by accents and BBQ ribs; and an American yuppie ashamed of her Mexican mother. Alejandra is tired of being mistaken for her son’s nanny; Gracie’s boyfriend has just had a child with a drug addict; and Connie can’t find a flight out of Texas on Christmas Eve. Together, their stories offer a unique peek at complex Mexican-American identities, challenging stereotypes with playwright Tanya Saracho’s trademark wit and humor.

Quita Mitos is a three-monologue play being performed with alternating casts. A solo version with Tanya Saracho in all three parts is scheduled for November 3 and 5, and continues every Saturday and Sunday of the run. The three woman version features Teatro Luna ensemble members Belinda Cervantes, Maritza Cervantes, and Isabel Quintero; they perform the play on November 4th and every Thursday and Friday of the run.

Quita Mitos is performed in English with a sprinkle of Spanish
