I Am My Own Wife

About the Show

The acclaimed Broadway production of I Am My Own Wife, Doug Wright’s 2004 Pulitzer Prize-winning play starring Jefferson Mays, is presented as part of the Goodman Theatre’s 2004-2005 season in the Albert. The production, the first to appear anywhere in the country following its hugely successful Broadway run, is directed by Moisés Kaufman.

Based on a true story, and inspired by interviews conducted by the playwright over several years,I Am My Own Wife tells the fascinating tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite who managed to survive the Nazi onslaught as well as the following, repressive Communist regime. The one-man play stars Obie Award-winner Jefferson Mays as over 40 characters, including the controversial figure herself and the American writer who became intrigued by her.
