Returning for a “command performance,” Sondheim’s vibrant musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes us to a brothel in the Roman Empire for a wickedly comic feast. Pseudolus, the slave of a prosperous merchant and his wife, has been placed in charge of his owners’ son while they are out of town. The son, Hero, has fallen in love with a beautiful courtesan and promises Pseudolus his freedom if he can arrange for their marriage. And so the stage is set for a circus of circumstances.
