The New Jersey Civic Youth Ballet, now in its 26th year, is renowned for its annual production of The Nutcracker at Centenary Stage Company. This season, NJCYB proudly presents La Boutique Fantasque – a charming ballet featuring performers ages 5 to 18, with professional accompaniment by Felipe Valentini of the New Jersey Ballet.
La Boutique Fantasque is set in France in 1860. A world famous toymaker has created exquisite dancing dolls in her toyshop. As she shows off her creations to potential patrons, the dolls perform a series of dances, all lovely, with the finest being a pair of can-can dolls. The can-can dolls are so enchanting and spirited that an American family immediately purchases the male doll and a Russian family immediately purchases the female doll. The deals are made and paid for, the dolls are placed in a box, and collection is arranged for the following day.
When the toymaker goes home for the night, the dolls magically come to life and start dancing. They are sad that the two can-can dolls, who are in love, are going to be separated. Together they all hatch a plan to help the can-can dolls escape.
The next morning, the customers return to collect their dolls, but the can-can dancers are no longer there. Angry, the families blame the toymaker and attack her. Just then, the other dolls come to life again to defend her. They chase the customers out of the shop.
Afterwards, the dolls dance around the toymaker in celebration. The can-can dolls are safe and together, and the toyshop is filled with joy once more!
