The Broadway-bound musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple makes its world premiere at the Alliance Theater.
This is a family saga of hope, inspiration and triumph as Walker’s diverse and unforgettable characters come vividly to life on stage. The central character, Celie, endures challenges and hardships on her journey toward personal discovery. This new world premiere musical adaptation of the story blends dance with the sounds and rhythms of blues, gospel, jazz, swing, rural roots and African music.
Director Gary Griffin leads a stellar creative team including Grammy Award-winning composer/lyricists Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray; Pulitzer Prize-winner Marsha Norman as librettist; choreographer Ken Roberson; and musical director Linda Twine.
