About This Show

The Hollywood Playhouse presents the East Coast premiere of the musical Picon Pie, the story of legendary actress and entertainer Molly Picon, written by Rose Leiman Goldemberg.

Molly Picon was the biggest Yiddish star of her day, and her day was long spanning most of the twentieth century. Picon used every one of her 58 inches in height to convey humor, poignancy, and passion for performances that glowed beneath her physical pranks. For much of her career, her forte was the adorable waif, often a motherless boy, who, with naïve gumption, a charming display of tears, laughter, somersaults, splits, songs, cartwheels and musical instruments, accompanied by an occasional farm animal and good luck, managed to make it in the adult world. However, her appeal broadened to audiences beyond the immigrant generation with a wide variety of roles on radio, television, Broadway and film, eventually earning an Oscar nomination for her role as an Italian mother in Come Blow Your Horn.
Hollywood Playhouse Artistic Director Andy Rogow directs the production with musical direction by Arthur Barnes.
