Bailiwick Repertory presents its Dyke Nyte Series. Bailiwick’s LTI, whose mission it is to develop audiences for lesbian arts, showcases a different talent each evening in Bailiwick’s intimate Studio Theater: solo-performance, stand-up comedy, torch-singing cabaret and poetic and dramatic spoken word performances.
Monday, July 26 at 8pm features the remarkable one-woman show POP CULTURE PRINCESS, written and performed by Elizabeth Whitney – returning to Chicago after several successful engagements here. Sexy and subversive, POP CULTURE PRINCESS is loosely based around three narratives: A monologue delivered by “Barbie” in which she critiques and then reinvents herself as a postmodern, performance artist; a poetic-style piece concerning role-playing, sexuality cues, and the 1970’s hit television show “Wonder Woman”; and readings from the author’s own adolescent journals, which indicate how compulsory heterosexuality shapes narratives of desire.
Tuesday, July 27 at 8pm is enlivened by the comedic stylings of the Hysterical Women, whose mission is represent lesbian diversity through entertainment, and these funny lesbians are diverse! They are: Delphina, a Latina beauty from San Antonio, Texas; the Indian-American Sapna Kumar, “40 years young butch” Carolyn Law; and “50-something former disco teacher” Julie Paradise. Any one of these women alone is hysterical enough, but together they are, according to Curve Magazine, “Chicago’s
outrageous lesbian standup troupe”!
Monday, August 2 at 8pm is an intimate evening of cabaret with songstress Pam Peterson and her one woman show, PAMME FATALE. Sultry and sexy, Pam serves up a number of her hottest (and funniest) songs that reveal the trials and tribulations of being a sweet and single songbird in search of a beautiful butch babe, and her life on the prowl (any takers?). Sassy and brassy, PAMME FATALE is an evening to remember!
Tuesday, August 3 at 8pm is an evening of poetry, storytelling and spoken word performance with three of Chicago’s most varied and captivating performers: Indian-American solo performer Sapna Kumar, African American storyteller and actor Kim Crutcher, and the vibrant, young newcomer poet Rose Tully. Each creates a distinct and entertaining performance.
