Emus on the Loose, An Emu-sical is a fun and beautiful family musical in one act about four self-involved emus who get loose from their farm in Kalamazoo and go on a thrilling adventure visiting some of Michigan’s iconic locations all while avoiding the sheriff! The emus visit Michigan’s capital of Lansing, cruise around the Motor City, Detroit, take a ferry to Mackinac Island, and find some thrills in Muskegon. Can they learn to work together to get home? Or will they be EMUS ON THE LOOSE? 

Emus on the Loose is a SEMI-true story… On November 30, 2022, a fierce windstorm swept through Oshtemo Township—just a few miles (or a short emu sprint) from Kalamazoo, Michigan. At Llama Woods Farm, while Christee and Randy Dyk were away at work, a strong gust blew open the gate to the emu enclosure and a crashing tree branch gave the six emus just the scare they needed to make a break for it. 

Soon, a Kalamazoo County sheriff’s deputy spotted one of the giant birds strolling down the road. The chase was on! With help from the Dyk family, they were able to round up the feathered fugitives. 

News outlets around the world pounced on the peculiar story, and it went viral on social media, with people sharing the deputy’s body cam footage and funny posts about marking themselves safe from stampeding emus. 

Emus on the Loose, An Emu-sical is an adaptation of the hit children’s book based on those real events. Packed with fun facts about emus and Michigan, Emus on the loose will have kids and their adults looking for lots of hidden details and jokes (all while secretly learning)!
