Anthony O’Brien “Dudley” George (1957-1995) is the only aboriginal
person killed by police during a land claims dispute in Canada in the
twentieth century. In 1942, the federal government forced the band from
their land for the war effort, with the promise to return the land once
the war was over. This never happened. In December 2007, the Province of
Ontario began the return of its portion of the disputed land but the
federal government, which holds the much larger tract of Stoney Point
land, still has not. Dudley George’s spirit continues to wait for his
home to be returned.
