In 1890 Chekhov was profoundly affected by his visit to a penal colony on the island of Sakalin in Siberia. Ward 6 was a fictional response to the horrendous living conditions he witnessed. This powerful adaptation tells the stories of inmates of an insane asylum who are wiser than their wardens, and doctors who question the purpose of healing.
