When a storm at sea batters a ship to pieces, twins Viola and Sebastian survive, unbeknownst to each other. They come to shore in Illyria, a strange and sultry land of dissatisfied souls, whose inhabitants are caught in endless tangles of unrequited love, and sometimes-requited lust. What follows is a twisting, snarled web of deceptions, mistaken identities, and passions that run high and often fall on unexpected, and unsuspecting, targets. Themes of androgyny and gender-confusion run throughout the production, setting aside cultural assumptions of what love is right, and what forbidden. Shakespeare’s remarkable play provides ample amounts of both fool and fury.
