About the Show

Written and performed by nationally-known hip-hop/spoken word artist Azeem, Rude Boy tells the story of Johnny Burke, a Jamaican-American factory worker whose life moves through dark alleyways and twisted corridors. Bedeviled by his past, traveling from the streets to an insane asylum, Johnny’s psyche is a battleground where “rage constantly does the nasty with guilt.” Told with comic wit and raw power, Rude Boy moves Azeem from hip-hop to his first full-length theater piece.

Azeem developed Rude Boy as part of The Marsh’s Performance Initiative and last May’s The Marsh Festival of New Voices. He has performed different versions of the piece at The Lincoln Center in New York, San Francisco Theater Fest at Yerba Buena Gardens and at the Redline Theater in Chicago.
