Broadway By the Bay continues its 43rd season with a bewitching revival of Stephen Sondheim’s ground-breaking musical comedy, Into the Woods. With direction by Broadway By the Bay’s Artistic Director Brooke Knight, this enchanting Tony Award-winner is a whimsical look at our most beloved fairy tales and what happens after "happily ever after." What begins as a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
In this magical hit, a mysterious narrator reveals the plights of a flock of iconic fairytale characters as they make their way into the woods to seek their various hearts’ desires: to go the ball; to make a potion; to lift a spell; to sell the cow; to get the money; to go to Grandmother’s house. Intertwining such classic fairytales as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk with the story of a childless Baker and his Wife who attempt to reverse a curse on their family, Into the Woods faces the real life consequences that occur when the fairytale ends.
Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine’s (book) clever romp through the woods explores the nature of growing up, the need for taking responsibility, and the true meaning of family.
