About This Show

Articulates and celebrates the philosophy of Cariño. The literal meaning of Cariño is love, affection, tenderness, and endearment. For Bluethenthal, Cariño also indicates a shift to a world that places its highest value on caring rather than on profit. This world premiere explores in movement, text, music and visual art, the cultural and global dimensions of caring. The strong, sensual, physicality that is the trademark of the woman-centered ABD ensemble, blends with the complex, sensual music of Ajayi Lumumba; the impassioned voices and lyrics of internationally-acclaimed singer Melanie DeMore and Mexican-American funk singer Mama CoAtl; the alluring poetry of LGBT /queer activist and cultural icon Judy Grahn, and the vibrant art of muralist Nadine Gay.
