Buddy Holly’s achievements are all the more remarkable considering his career lasted a mere three years, ending with his tragic death in a plane crash in 1959. Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story chronicles the rock ‘n’ roll legend’s meteoric rise to the top of the charts to become the best-selling recording artist in the world before he died at age 22.
The show uses Holly’s music to tell much of his story, with the cast performing his vast catalogue of hits live on stage, including “Peggy Sue,” That’ll Be the Day,” “Oh Boy” and “Rave On.” In between recording sessions with producer Norman Petty and concerts at venues such as New York’s Apollo Theater, the show delves into Holly’s personal life, particularly his whirlwind courtship and marriage to Maria Elena Santiago. Stephen Moorer directs.
