About This Show

Mama Calizo’s Voice Factory & Eye Zen Art present the world premiere of Blackbird: A Queer Vocal History, written & performed by Seth Eisen.

The show includes puppetry and a hybrid of live performance, movement, music, video, song and storytelling.

Blackbird: A Queer Vocal History is a full-length, historical musical pastiche of queer music written and performed by Seth Eisen (the chameleon / trickster in Keith Hennessy’s Circo Zero productions) depicting gay performers from the 1930s to the present who, despite their outsider status, found innovative ways to be out, queer and vocal. Blackbird, a unique civil rights story features a history of maverick performers who gave new voice to the queer underground. From a prohibition speakeasy to the Borscht-Belt, from a Zen priest to a contemporary Bulgarian pop singer, Blackbird pushes the boundaries of how gender variance and anti-discrimination is viewed through history.
