Water Dreams and Air Songs

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, percussionist, and sound artist Susie Ibarra reunites her genre-crossing Talking Gong Trio alongside Claire Chase and Alex Peh—and enlists vocal ensemble HEX—for a program celebrating sound as a physical phenomenon. Anchoring the evening is the world premiere of her new work with librettist Jeffrey Yang, The Water Dreams of Animals, inspired by Ibarra’s meditative sound studies of historical waters and our connections to them. This new work, commissioned by the LA Phil, will have its concert premiere on a program opening with works from Tania León, Leilehua Lanzilotti, and José Maceda that honor sonic traditions from Hawaiʻi to Cuba to the Philippines.
