Titus & Juliet

About the Show

LA based directors Jennifer Bushnell and Michael Najjar present two stunning new adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedies Romeo and Juliet and Titus Andronicus, aptly re-named Titus & Juliet.

Jennifer Bushnell’s Romeo and Juliet focuses on the love affair between Romeo and Juliet, foregoing the events surrounding the family feud between Capulets and Montagues. In Bushnell’s version, the lovers’ story is
concentrated to find the seed of the love itself and how it grows despite
the difficult circumstances regarding family and history.

Michael Najjar’s Titus Andronicus explores the themes of war, revenge, and retribution in the age of empire. Drawing parallels to the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Najjar’s adaptation reflects the effects of war on those living in the empire and on those living under military occupation. This portrait of war and revenge examines war’s devastating effects on both aggressor and the victim.

By adapting these two classic Shakespearean plays, Bushnell and Najjar find new variations on Shakespeare’s themes through both staging and text. This evening of theatre promises to shock, delight and stir all of us living in
these tragic times.

Schedule: November 28, December 3, 5, 10, 12, 17 & 19, 2003 at 8:00 pm
