Tibi’s Law

Written by French playwright Jean Verdun, Tibi’s Law is set in an unnamed country bordering the Niger river. This timely and affecting drama focuses on the impact of contemporary globalization on the Third World. The production, translated and directed by Robert Cohen, starring Saul Williams (SLAM) and Erinn Anova, is the world premiere of this play in any language.

Tibi and Mara, formerly childhood friends, rediscover each other in an environment of crushing poverty and political oppression. Tibi, a folk philosopher and former journalist, has found employment conducting ‘typical’ funerals for the European tourist trade, a job for which he is aptly suited. As he speaks to the tourists and to the families of the deceased, he also speaks to us – of his life, his family, and the rise and fall of African and European civilizations.
