The Light in the Piazza

The New York Times said The Light in the Piazza has “the most intensely romantic score of any Broadway musical since West Side Story.” With praise like that, it’s no wonder that one of its six 2005 Tony Awards was for Best Score. Based on the novella by Elizabeth Spencer, it tells the story of a mother and daughter traveling through Italy in the early ’50s. The daughter’s relationship with a handsome Florentine is tested by a closely guarded secret. It features music and lyrics by Adam Guettel and a book by Craig Lucas.
