About This Show

“I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness, I hear the approaching thunder. And yet, when I look up at the sky I somehow feel that peace and tranquility will return once more.”
— Anne Frank, July 15, 1944

Rarely have plays made such an impression on theatergoers as this drama based on the true story of an inquisitive young Jewish girl whose family goes into hiding during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Anne is a young girl on tip-toe looking out the window at life, yearning for her playmates, pets and confidantes, but instead sharing her feelings only with her diary. This timely, important play is filled with humor and honesty as Anne begins to blossom into womanhood and an awareness of her own emotions, intellect, and sexuality. Anne comes of age as a beautiful, thoughtful and extraordinary girl. Her story is one that penetrates the senses with humor, love, fear and startling clarity.

Wendy Kesselman’s recent adaptation interweaves newly discovered writings from Anne’s diary, as well as survivor accounts, into a testament to the power of the human spirit. The play is adapted from the 1955 Pulitzer Prize-winning classic of the same name by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. James O’Neil directs.
