New York City
Nicky Silver’s Raised in Captivity opens at a gravesite where Sebastian and his sister Bernadette are gathered for their mother’s funeral. Sebastian is a writer for Vanity Fair, but unfortunately his last article was highly unfounded and now he’s broke. Bernadette offers to take him in, but she has demons of her own to conquer. One of them is her husband, Kip, who’s at a crossroads of his own. A dentist by trade, Kip has decided to give up his practice and become a painter, much to Bernadette’s dismay. Later, when Sebastian decides to dump his therapist due to financial and personal reasons, the doctor becomes desperate to keep her client. When she professes her love for him, Sebastian becomes even more withdrawn. The only thing keeping him uplifted is his pen pal, Dylan, who is in jail for murder.
