By the Waters of Babylon

About the Show

This poetic story by Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Schenkkan follows the friendship which flowers between Arturo, a gardener in exile from his native Cuba, and Catherine, the widow of a Texas college professor who has been ostracized by her community. Arturo arrives to tend Catherine’s neglected garden. They share a drink, a dance, and a secret, and their relationship blossoms in unexpected ways. Together, they discover that it’s never too late to feel, to create, and to reclaim one’s roots.

The original production of By the Waters of Babylon was commissioned by Oregon Shakespeare Festival and was the surprise runaway hit of OSF’s 2005 season. Rubicon presents the second production of this magical story and the California premiere. Playwright Robert Schenkkan is in residence during the play’s rehearsal period.
