Whoopi Goldberg will join Stage Entertainment UK in producing the Broadway premiere of the new musical Sister Act, to play a theater to be announced in Spring 2011. Four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks will direct.

The musical tells the story of a disco diva put into protective custody in a convent. The show features an original score with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater. It features a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and choreography by Anthony Van Laast. Casting will be announced at a later date.

The musical is currently running at the London Palladium. That production is directed by Peter Schneider, and it was recently announced that Goldberg will assume the role of Mother Superior for a limited engagement, August 10-31. Goldberg played the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier in the 1992 movie Sister Act, upon which the musical is based.

The Broadway production will feature scenery by Klara Zieglerova, costumes by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Natasha Katz, and sound by Mick Potter. The production team will also include musical supervisor Michael Kosarin, dance music arranger Mark Hummel, orchestrator Doug Besterman and Andy Barrett, who is in charge of electronic music.
