Legendary singer-songwriter Phoebe Snow has died of complications following a massive hemorrhagic stroke which she suffered on January 19, 2010. She was 60 years old.
She released her first album, Phoebe Snow in 1974 and the song “Poetry Man” was her first huge hit. She earned a Best New Artist Grammy nomination in 1975.
She released 16 albums throughout her career, including Phoebe Snow LIVE at Woodstock. At the time of her stroke, Snow had just finished recording many songs, and was rehearsing with her new band preparing to open a resident one-night-a week Phoebe Snow Night at the City Winery in New York.
Much of Snow’s life was spent caring for her late daughter Valerie, who was born with severe injuries due to medical malpractice.
Snow’s awards include a MAC Lifetime Achievement Award, the Cultural Achievement Award for New York, a Don Kirschner Rock Award, the New York Music Award, and the Clio Award for her work singing in TV commercials.
She is survived by her sister, Julie Laub, and other friends and relatives. The funeral service will be private. A memorial concert celebrating her life will be announced shortly.
