Will Sofia Coppola Direct a Film Version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid?
The acclaimed director is in negotiations with Working Title and Universal.
Oscar-winning screenwriter/director Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) is in negotiations to helm a film version of Hans Christian Andersen's short story The Little Mermaid for Working Title and Universal, Variety reports. Caroline Thompson will rewrite the screenplay with previous drafts by Kelly Marcel and Abi Morgan.
First published in 1837, The Little Mermaid tells the story of a young woman who is willing to give up her life and identity as a mermaid in order to gain the love of a human prince. There is no indication about how this screen version of the material will compare with other adaptations.
As a property, The Little Mermaid is best known for its 1989 Disney animated screen version, which won Oscars for best song and best score. It was subsequently turned into a Broadway musical, which has gone on to play around the world.
