This month, Broadway’s Marquis Theatre will play host to 33 Chinese nationals who are highly skilled in Shaolin Kung Fu when Soul of Shaolin (January 15-31) arrives with the story of a boy named Hui Guang who is separated from his mother by war. Taken in and raised by the legendary monks of the Shaolin temple, Hui Gang becomes an accomplished master of Shaolin Kung Fu and embarks on a spectacular journey of self-discovery.

For little ones who love the snow and can’t imagine winter without it, Kendra MacDevitt and Diana Harkin have the perfect fairytale at Baruch Performing Arts Center, The Snow Quest – A Holiday Adventure (January 24), the story of a princess and her sister who must battle their way through the enchanted forest to defeat the evil villain and break his spell which has kept snow away from the Land of Snowdrop for 100 years. Written by MacDevitt with music by Harkin, this musical adventure will also feature a host of post show activities, including face painting and a coloring contest.

On a less seasonal note, Manhattan Children’s Theatre has a treat for any kids who don’t like to take baths. Harry the Dirty Dog (January 10-February 22) decides one day to forgo baths entirely, and soon his own family can’t recognize him through all the dirt. At the New Victory Theater, get in a dose of an ancient Greek epic, infused with modern energy and imagination, in Jason and the Argonauts (January 23-February 1) , the story of Jason’s perilous journey on the Argo in search of the Golden Fleece. The New Victory will also play host to a more syncopated life story, starring Kyle Cameron, a compelling look at lost dreams and unrealized ambitions in Cranked (Duke on 42nd Street, January 9-25). A better fit for the tween crowd, this cautionary tale explores Stan’s spiraling descent into crystal meth addiction.

Comix will present stories straight from the mouths of children when Story Pirates (January 10) takes the stage, featuring a group of actors, improv comedians, and teaching artists that use tales written by elementary school students as source material for outrageous, over-the-top musical plays. The youthful inspiration continues over at TADA! Youth Theater, set to open its season with Golly Gee Whiz!, January 9-February 15, the Eric Rockwell-Joanne Bogart musical based on the classic Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney films of the 1930’s.
