Hairspray, Sweeney Todd Receive Critics’ Choice Nominations

The film versions of the Broadway musicals Hairspray and Sweeney Todd have each received five nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association for their annual Critics’ Choice Awards, which will be bestowed in Santa Monica, California on January 7. The ceremony will be broadcast live on VH1.

Hairspray received nods for Best Comedy Film, Best Family Film, star Nikki Blonsky for Best Young Actress, Best Acting Ensemble, and Best Song for “Come So Far.” Sweeney received nods for Best Film, Johnny Depp as Best Actor, Edward Sanders (Tobias) as Best Young Actor, Tim Burton as Best Director, and Best Acting Ensemble.

The Walt Disney feature Enchanted picked up four nominations for Best Family Film, Amy Adams for Best Actress, Alan Menken as Best Composer, and “That’s How You Know” for Best Song.

Cate Blanchett received two acting nominations, as Best Actress for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Best Supporting Actress for I’m Not There. Other theater veterans who earned acting nods include Julie Christie, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hal Holbrook, Catherine Keener, Vanessa Redgrave, and Amy Ryan.
