On the Town's Alysha Umphress Cooks Up a Sweat on International Hot and Spicy Food Day

The Broadway musical takes its holidays seriously.

According to Chase's Calendar of Events, today, January 16, has been dubbed "National Nothing Day" — a day proposed in 1972 by columnist Harold Pullman Coffin for all Americans to "just sit without celebrating, observing or honoring anything."

Sorry, to burst your bubble, Harold, but your day of nothingness was pre-empted by "International Hot and Spicy Food Day," which also stakes a claim on January 16 (not to be confused with "National Hot and Spicy Food Day," which falls on August 19).

As a treat on this culinary holiday, Broadway's On the Town is sharing a clip of Alysha Umphress performing her sizzling number "I Can Cook Too" from the classic musical revival, now running at the Lyric Theatre. You can choose which "day" you'd rather observe, but we can tell you — a bowl of hot and spicy chili tastes much better than a bowl of nothing.
