The Acting Company to Honor Seldes and Newman on October 25

Marian Seldes and Phyllis Newman will be honored at The Acting Company’s annual Masquerade on Monday, October 25 at Gotham Hall (1356 Broadway at 36th Street) at 6:30pm. The event will be hosted by Charles Busch and will feature entertainment by Avenue Q‘s John Tartaglia.

Seldes will receive the John Houseman Award for her work as a classical acting teacher at the Juilliard School; her students have included Kevin Spacey, Kevin Kline, William Hurt, Patti LuPone, Laura Linney, Robin Williams, Christine Baranski, Boyd Gaines, and many more. Seldes made her Broadway debut in the 1947 revival of Medea (starring Judith Anderson) and subsequently appeared in the original productions of The Chalk Garden, Tiny Alice, A Delicate Balance, Equus, Deathtrap, and 45 Seconds From Broadway, in addition to numerous Off-Broadway productions.

Newman will receive the Joan Warburg Humanitarian Award for founding the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative of The Actors’ Fund, an organization dedicated to addressing the health issues impacting women. Newman has appeared on Broadway in the original productions of such musicals as Wish You Were Here, Bells Are Ringing, Subways Are For Sleeping, The Apple Tree, and her one-woman show The Madwoman of Central Park West.
