Judith Jamison will receive The Town Hall‘s Friend of the Arts award at a gala event to be held on October 16. The prize is presented annually to individuals in recognition and appreciation for their abiding interest in the development, enrichment and support of the arts.

Jamison, artistic director emeritus of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, joined the company in 1965. During her time with the company as a performer, Ailey created some of his most enduring roles for her, most notably the solo Cry. During the 1970s and ’80s, she appeared as a guest artist with ballet companies all over the world, starred in the hit Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies, and formed her own company, The Jamison Project. She returned to Alvin Ailey in 1989 and later succeeded Ailey as artistic director.

The gala and awards ceremony will be held at the Princeton Club of New York and will also honor Dr. Joyce F. Brown, president of the Fashion Institute of Technology. It will be preceded by a matinee performance of the Broadway Originals concert being presented at Town Hall as part of the Broadway Cabaret Festival.
