A spokesman for Telecharge told TheaterMania this afternoon that all Broadway shows will be canceled tonight in the wake of an apparent terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Two separate, hijacked planes crashed into the two separate towers of the WTC around 9am this morning, and both towers collapsed almost entirely within the next hour or so. Attacks on other U.S. sites, including the Pentagon, have also been reported.
The Telecharge spokesman said that performances scheduled for this evening at the Shubert theaters in Los Angeles and Boston, and at the Wang Center in Boston, are also canceled. Most likely, shows will be canceled in other U.S. cities as well in a demonstration of respect for lives lost in these attacks. Washington, D.C. is, of course, a theater town, and performances there will almost certainly be affected as well.
No information was immediately available as to the status of Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway performances this evening; nor was TheaterMania able to determine if Broadway shows will be back on schedule as of tomorrow, which is a matinee day. Your best sources of information at the moment are probably the various ticketing agencies for the various shows and venues. You can phone Telecharge at 212-239-6200 and Ticketmaster at 212-307-7171.
