Des McAnuff, Geoffrey Rush, Sergio Trujillo, et al. Nominated for Australian Helpmann Awards

Nominations have been announced for the 2010 Helpmann Awards, which are Australia’s equivalent to the Tonys. The awards will be presented on Monday, September 6 at Opera Theatre, Sydney Opera House.

Stage and screen star Geoffrey Rush has received a nomination for Best Male Actor in a Musical for his performance in Melbourne Theatre Company’s The Drowsy Chaperone. Among this production’s other nominations are Best Musical; performers Adam Murphy and Christie Whelan; director Simon Phillips; and choreographer Andrew Hallsworth.

The musical Jersey Boys has been nominated for 10 awards, including Best Musical; director Des McAnuff; choreographer Sergio Trujillo; actors Bobby Fox, Scott Johnson, and Lisa Adam; musical directors Ron Melrose and Luke Hunter; scenic designers Klara Zieglerova and Michael Clark; lighting designer Howell Binkley; and sound designer Steve Canyon Kennedy.

Arts Asia Pacific and Power Arts’ production of Avenue Q also picked up multiple nominations, including for Best Musical; actors Michala Banas, Mitchell Butel, Luke Joslin, and Christina O’Neil; songwriters Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez; director Jonathan Biggins; and choreographer Nathan M. Wright.
