The movie is an adaptation of Graham Greene's novel about a young gangster who marries a waitress who has witnessed a murder he has committed. As previously announced, Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough are also featured in the film, to be directed by Rowan Joffe.

Greene's novel was previously adapted into a film in 1947. Richard Attenborough and Carol Marsh starred in that version. While Joffe's film will use Greene's book rather than the earlier film for inspiration, the director is resetting the story in 1964 rather than the book's original setting of 1939.
