Ron Bohmer, Carolee Carmello, Beth Fowler, Brian Noonan, and Mary Stout will star in the New York Musical Theatre Festival presentation of The Night of the Hunter, September 26-October 1 at 37 Arts (450 West 37th Street).

The show is a co-production with Dallas’ Lyric Stage. It will be directed by Philip Wm. McKinley, who helmed The Boy from Oz and the New York City Opera production of The Most Happy Fella, and it will feature set design by three-time Emmy Award winner Ray Klausen.

The musical was adapted from Davis Grubb’s 1954 novel of the same title by Stephen Cole (book and lyrics) and the late Claibe Richardson (music). Cole’s other shows include After the Fair and Dodsworth, and he is a winner of the Edward Kleban Award. Richardson, who died in 2003, is best known for his score for the Broadway musical The Grass Harp.

The Night of the Hunter tells the story of a terrifying crook who poses as a priest and tries to get two young children to tell him where their father hid the money he stole from a bank. The 1955 film version, directed by Charles Laughton, starred Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish, and Shelley Winters. Richard Chamberlain had the lead in a 1991 television remake.

Bohmer, last seen on Broadway in The Woman in White, is currently starring Off-Broadway in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Carmello received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Lestat and a previous nomination for Parade. Fowler is a two-time Tony nominee for Sweeney Todd and The Boy From Oz; she is currently co-starring in the Williamstown Theatre Festival’s production of Sweet Bird of Youth. Noonan’s credits include The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. Stout has appeared on Broadway in Beauty and the Beast and Jane Eyre.
