Singer/songwriter Amanda McBroom will return to New York in the musical A Woman of Will, set to begin previews at the Daryl Roth Theatre on September 15 in advance of an October 2 opening. The show has a book and lyrics by McBroom, with music, additional lyrics, and direction by her longtime collaborator Joel Silberman.

A Woman of Will tells the story of Kate, a writer who’s on an unrelenting deadline to finish the lyrics of a Broadway-bound musical version of The Merchant of Venice and is also facing important decisions about her marriage and future. In desperation, she turns to Shakespeare’s leading ladies for guidance. The creative team for the show also includes Trefoni Michael Rizzi (scenic, projection, and lighting design), Tobin Ost (costume design), Lewis Mead (sound design), and Larry Hochman (orchestrations).

McBroom is best known as the writer of the number-one hit “The Rose”; among her other popular songs are “Dreaming”, “The Portrait,” and “Errol Flynn.” She is a past recipient of the Johnny Mercer Award for Songwriter of the Year. Her original musical Heartbeats has played at the Old Globe, the Goodspeed Opera House, and the Pasadena Playhouse. Most recently, McBroom co-wrote the score of Dangerous Beauty, which had a workshop production earlier this month at New York Stage & Film at Vassar College. A world-renowned cabaret performer, her acting credits include the Broadway production of Seesaw and starring roles in productions of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Sweeney Todd, Mame, and A Little Night Music.
