On Monday, May 3, Kenny Leon's True Colors Theatre Company and JuJamcyn Theaters presented the fourth annual August Wilson Monologue Competition National finals at Broadway's August Wilson Theatre.
The evening featured performances by LaTanya Richardson, Keith Randolph Smith, Heather Alicia Simms, Chris Chalk, and Ruben Santiago-Hudson in the montage August Wilson Always Did Believe in Love, assembled by Todd Kreidler, and giving a taste of characters from all ten plays in Wilson's "Century Cycle" as they riff, muse, and wonder at love. Guy Davis, who recently appeared in the Broadway revival of Finian's Rainbow, also performed. Among the guests was Phylicia Rashad.
Judges for the evening included playwright Regina Taylor, costume designer Constanza Romero (who is Wilson's widow), and actors Russell Hornsby and Mykelti Williamson. The competition featured 12 competitors from the regional finals in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and New York performing monologues from Wilson's plays.
