Kristin Chenoweth, Mary Rodgers, Sarah Ruhl, et al. Win Lilly Awards

The Committee for Recognizing Women in Theater presented the first annual Lilly Awards in honor of playwright Lillian Hellman, at Playwrights Horizons on Monday, May 24. In total, 17 women theater artists were honored.

Mary Rodgers, best known as the lyricist of Once Upon a Mattress, was given the award for Lifetime Achievement. Tony and Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, currently starring in the Broadway revival of Promises, Promises, received the award for Performance.

Other winners included playwrights Melissa Joan Gibson, Lucy Thurber, Chisa Hutchinson, Deborah Laufer, Liz Duffy Adams, Annie Baker, Young Jean Lee, and Sarah Ruhl; directors Pam McKinnon, Leigh Silverman, and Anne Kauffman; designers Christine Jones, Jane Greenwood, and Frances Aronson; artistic director Maria Striar; and Emily Morse, who received the Lilly Award for Advocacy.

Presenters for the evening included Rob Ashford, Lisa Banes, Susan Birkenhead, Mark Brokaw, Adam Bock, Julie Crosby, Gina Gionfriddo, David Greenspan, Tina Howe, Julia Jordan, Michael Mayer, Marsha Norman, Lynn Nottage, Neil Pepe, Alison Pill, Tim Sanford, John Weidman, and Doug Wright.
